Industry Background & Challenge
A fashion e-commerce brand faced a common industry plague: High Return-to-Origin (RTO) rates on Cash on Delivery (COD) orders. Many customers would place impulse orders and then refuse delivery or be unavailable.
Why WhatsApp Was Chosen
Email confirmations had low open rates, and SMS was non-interactive. WhatsApp allowed the brand to verify the user's intent to buy before shipping the product.
How WhatsApp API Was Implemented
The API was integrated into the order management system (Shopify). A "COD Confirmation" flow was triggered specifically for COD orders.
Automation & Workflows Used
- COD Verification Message: Immediately after placing a COD order, the customer received a WhatsApp message with two buttons: "Confirm Order" and "Cancel Order".
- Address Validation: If the address seemed incomplete, the bot asked for a location pin.
- Delivery Notifications: "Out for Delivery" alerts ensured the customer was home to receive the package.
Measurable Outcomes
- 18% Reduction in RTO: Fake and accidental orders were filtered out before shipping.
- Increased Prepaid Conversions: Customers were nudged to convert COD to prepaid for a small discount via WhatsApp.
- Better Customer Experience: Customers appreciated the transparency and control.
Key Learnings
Adding a "friction" step like confirmation for COD orders actually improves profitability by filtering out bad orders early.
